Surrounding Sightseeing Areas

We would like to share some of our favorite sightseeing spots.

Hida Takayama

This is one of the most popular sightseeing locations in Japan. “Old Town” is lined with streets still reminiscent of 300 years ago, the “Morning Market” is filled with vegetables and souvenirs from the Hida region, “Takayama Jinya” is the only remaining magistrate’s office in all of Japan, and “Takayama Teramachi” is another popular spot with a cluster of temples, like Kyoto. The “Takayama Festival” takes place in spring and fall, where splendid floats are paraded.

Shirakawago

A village of thatched roof houses that has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy taking a peek into the good and old countryside of Japan.

Hida Furukawa

Hidafurukawa is another castle town that equals Takayama, known for the Setogawa canal lined with mortar white earth walls. Have a relaxing time in the quiet, calm town. “Furukawa Festival” takes place each spring, featuring “Okoshi Daiko,” a clash of naked men, and the splendid “Festival Floats.”

Shinhotaka Ropeway

This is the closest sightseeing spot from our inn. Take the aerial tram up to an altitude of 5,935 feet (1,809 meter) and experience the vastness of the Northern Alps.

Kamikochi

One of the most scenic locations in the Northern Alps. Tashiro Pond and Myojin Pond, both created from the currents coming from Mount Hotaka, as well as Kappa Bridge are popular sites. A beautiful natural scenery is created through the interweaving of mountains, greenery and water.

Bus or taxi must be used due to transportation regulations.

Norikuradake

Take Japan’s highest altitude road, the “Norikura Skyline” up to Tatamidaira, and easily make the ascent to the top of the mountain.

Bus or taxi must be used due to transportation regulations.

Bear Park

A zoo limited to only bears, a rare find in Japan! The park is extremely popular for families with children.

Azumino

A rural area stretching across the base of the Northern Alps. This region was loved by many including Walter Weston, known as the father of Japanese modern mountaineering. Yasunari Kawabata, a well-known Japanese writer has famously written of this area as having a “beauty of stillness.”
Known for soba and wasabi.
